Detroit’s State of the Schools

Detroit School Talk was present at Detroit’s very first parent driven State of the Schools  sponsored by 482Forward.

We asked parents, community leaders, teachers and students “What are your thoughts about tonight’s  event?”
The responses were mixed, some felt an open and honest conversation was refreshing. Others hoped for more and thought it mimicked the same old battle of Charter Vs. Traditional Public schools.
Grand Valley State, Central State and Detroit Public Schools Community District Leaders had 5 minutes to report their vision for schools.

Chalkbeats Erin Einhorn and WDET’s Sacha Raiyn helped school leaders dive into a deeper conversation. However questions from the audience ignited more tension in the already heated debate about the need to work collaboratively for the sake of all students.
Attendees left wanting more! More answers, more parent voice, more budget overview and of course more open conversations like tonight’s  State of the Schools Address.

Check out what people said!
